What is red soil?

What is red soil?

Red soil is mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical rain forests. It is reddish-brown in color and is formed by the weathering of carbonates in a hot and humid environment. The water content is not high and the soil is relatively sticky.

What kind of soil is red soil

Laterite is a kind of clay soil, which is characterized by high water content, low density and low compressibility. It can be divided into many types such as oily red soil, mud red soil, sandy red mud, sandy sticky red mud, thick gray-yellow mud, and red-yellow mud.

The role of red soil

The leaching effect of red soil itself is relatively strong. If you want to use it, you need to improve it in time to change its undesirable properties such as low mineral nutrients, high acidity, poor fertilizer retention, and heavy texture. The specific measure is to increase the application of mineral fertilizers such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

The advantages of red soil are that it has good structure and is acidic, making it more suitable for plants that prefer acidic environments. The disadvantages are that it is very sticky and the soil easily becomes compacted. This characteristic also results in poor air permeability and drainage in red soil.

What is suitable for red soil?

Red soil is more suitable for planting plants such as fir, tung oil tree, citrus, bamboo, palm, etc. These plants all like acid, and the acidity of red soil is relatively strong. The purpose of supplementing fertility can be achieved by applying more organic fertilizers, using lime and supplementing phosphorus fertilizers.
