How to deal with hyacinth bulbs after they bloom (can they still be grown the next year after they wither)

How to deal with hyacinth bulbs after they bloom (can they still be grown the next year after they wither)

Hyacinth is suitable for hydroponics and soil cultivation, and after buying the bulbs, they will sprout directly when planted, and the buds will bloom, and the fragrance is very strong. Therefore, it is very affordable to grow a lot.

Generally, the flowering period of hyacinth can last from half a month to a month. Sometimes it blooms twice and it can take more than a month from the first flower to the second flower .

What to do after hyacinth bulbs bloom

Usually, after hyacinths bloom, our bulbs will become thinner because we definitely do not have enough nutrients, so we must take good care of them after they bloom.

1. Cut off the flower stalks

After hyacinth finishes blooming, cut off its pedicels in time. The cutting position should be about two centimeters above the base, leaving one section of the stem.

After cutting it off, put it in the sun to let its wound dry quickly. When watering, remember not to water the stem. When the stem is completely dry, just pull it out.

2. Add fertilizer

Generally, fertilizer should be added in time after pruning is completed . What fertilizer do we use?

We directly use potassium fertilizer for it. If you have potassium fertilizer on hand, its bulb will swell quickly and grow very fast, and the root system will be strong.

If not, you can use fertilizers mainly composed of phosphorus and potassium, which is what we often call potassium dihydrogen phosphate .

Feed it 2 to 3 times a month , then place it in the place with the most light, and sprinkle some multi-element slow-release fertilizer on the surface of the potting soil.

Continue like this until all its leaves wither and fall off, and the entire leaf blade is gone, then we can preserve it.

3. Watering

After the flowers have bloomed and pruning is completed, the soil in the pot should not lack moisture. If the soil surface is about two centimeters dry, just water it thoroughly. Maintain good ventilation and sufficient light.

Just wait until all its leaves turn yellow and dry, then we can preserve the bulbs. The method of preserving the bulbs is also very simple.

If you find that all its leaves have turned yellow and withered, we can put it in a well-ventilated place, away from light, but under bright indoor light.

4. Place it in a suitable place for maintenance

Keep it in a place where the temperature is not too high and continue until autumn comes. When the temperature drops below 30 degrees, it will pass the dormant period.

Then we can manage the watering normally, but it is best to take out its bulbs and check them.

Then, we can cut off the roots at the bottom and the yellow leaves, and put them in a well-ventilated place to dry the wounds and roots.

5. Bulb preservation

Then wrap it in newspaper or put it in a perforated ziplock bag and store it.

Don't store it in strong light, you can put it in a bright place indoors. When the temperature is below 30 degrees, we can take it out and transfer it to soil or hydroponics.

6. Blooming after replanting

Hyacinths grown in water will generally become smaller after blooming, and the leaves will not continue to grow and will wither directly. So if you want hyacinths to bloom continuously and all year round, you must remember to grow them in soil.

If you keep up with the fertilizer in the second year, it can continue to bloom again. If you grow hyacinths in soil, do not ignore them after they bloom and do not throw them away.

[Summary] As long as you follow the above methods, hyacinth will bloom and grow as usual in the second year.
