What to do if the leaves of coleus turn yellow

What to do if the leaves of coleus turn yellow

The reason why the leaves of coleus turn yellow

The yellowing and withering of coleus leaves are caused by improper water, light and nutrients.

Improper moisture

The leaves of coleus are large and thin, and they consume water quickly, so they require sufficient water supply. If there is a lack of water, the leaves will easily wilt and lose their luster. Of course, an environment that is too dry can also cause the leaves to wilt. Therefore, during the growing season of coleus, especially in summer, water it sufficiently and spray water on the leaves and the environment frequently to keep the soil moist and increase the air humidity.

Light discomfort

Most coleus are purple, and under the sunlight, the light purple is very dazzling. But if the light is too strong, the leaves will be burned, causing the plant to suffer. If the plant is in the shade and lacks light for a long time, the leaves will not be able to carry out photosynthesis to accumulate nutrients and will turn yellow.

Improper fertilization

An important reason for the yellowing of coleus leaves is excessive fertilization. Applying too much fertilizer at one time, or applying raw fertilizer, will burn the roots, hindering the transport of nutrients and causing the leaves to turn yellow.

How to prevent coleus leaves from turning yellow

Ensure adequate lighting

Coleus requires sufficient light. Exposing it to sunlight during its growth period can make the leaves bright and beautiful. If there is insufficient light, the color of the leaves will gradually fade. If it is kept in a shaded environment for a long time, the leaves will turn yellow or even wilt. Except for the need for appropriate shade around noon in summer and early autumn to prevent exposure to strong sunlight, sufficient light should be given in other seasons.

Stay hydrated

Because coleus leaves are large and thin, they consume water quickly. If there is drought, the leaves will easily wither, and if the air is dry, they will lose their luster. Therefore, the soil in the pot needs to be kept moist during the growing period, and watering should be sufficient in the hot season. At the same time, water should be sprayed on the leaves frequently to increase the air humidity.

Timely supplement of nutrients

During the peak growing season, compound liquid fertilizer should be applied once a month. If too much fertilizer or watering is applied, it will easily cause the plant to grow too tall, the internodes to be too long, and the leaves to be sparse, thus reducing its ornamental value.
