Cultivation method of potted lotus (methods and steps for growing lotus at home)

Choose the right flower pot

For cultivating lotus, shallow pots with an inner diameter of more than 30 cm, bucket pots or shallow tanks with a diameter of more than 60 cm are usually used.

The purpose of doing this is to allow the stems and leaves of the lotus to fully stretch, promote its normal growth and development, and make the lotus grow large leaves and bloom large flowers.

If you use old pots for planting, you should clean the inside and outside of the old pots in advance and expose them to the sun for a few days to sterilize them.

Soil selection for lotus cultivation

Lotus likes fertile, humus-rich soil. When choosing soil for planting, it is best to collect pond silt and clay before winter, and pile them in layers in a sunny place.

After being dried in the sun, it is crushed and sieved in the spring of the following year, and about 10% to 20% river sand is added to make the soil loose and breathable before it can be used for planting.

How to cultivate lotus

In northern regions, lotus roots are planted in April. First, find the lotus root head and feel back to 2 to 3 nodes, pinch it off at the running point, and keep the top bud, waist bud and tail bud intact.

Usually 3 nodes are taken as 1 plant; when planting, first put 1~2 cm thick fine river sand on the bottom of the pot, then fill it with 10 cm thick soil, and put 200~300 grams of hoof horn or pig hair in the middle of the pot as base fertilizer.

Then cover the pond mud to the middle of the pot, plant the lotus root against the edge of the pot with the head low and the tail high, cover the lotus root head with 6 cm of soil and the tail with 1 cm of soil, leaving a 10 cm water outlet on top.

After the lotus is planted, place a small flower pot in the center of the pot to prevent the soil from being washed away when watering. When you start watering, you should wait until the water is completely penetrated before filling it up.

1~2 days after planting, wash out the potting water and debris floating on the water surface and discard them. After the potting soil has settled for 2~3 days, add clean water about 2 cm deep. As the leaf buds grow and the temperature rises, gradually add water to the mouth of the pot.
