How to press branches of roses to promote shoot growth (methods of topping large shrub rose seedlings to promote shoot growth)

After growing roses for so many years, I have some experience. I think there should be different methods to strengthen branches and promote shoot growth for roses of different varieties, seedlings of different sizes, and in different conditions.

Slow growing varieties

For example, for roses that grow slowly, such as Greenland, Mary, Youchan, Dragonfly, and Porch, you cannot use the growth-promoting method at will.

①Don't trim easily

Dragonfly plants are prone to stunting when pruned, so be careful when cutting . I didn't do it this summer. I just pruned the remaining flowers and controlled the plant shape in winter.

②Don’t let the seedlings bloom

The porch has short branches that bloom. Once there are too many flowers, the seedlings will not grow much. If the seedlings are not big enough, it is not recommended to keep the flowers.

Varieties of Aijiangmiao

For example, the Red Dragon, the Elishaster, Manet and others bought at the same time, all grew super big, but the Red Dragon grew slowly, and the soil where it was planted was a bit poor, so it was sluggish and did not grow.

These varieties need to pay attention to sunlight exposure. Lack of sunlight will easily cause the seedlings to become stunted and not grow branches. They also love fertilizer, so when planted in the ground, they must be exposed to more sunlight, fertilized, and watered.

Normal growth rate varieties

These varieties grow faster and are more durable. Whether it is pruning or fertilizing, it is relatively easy to keep up with their growth rate, and they are also easy to grow shoots and branches.

These methods are commonly used to promote branching

1. Press branches and pull horizontally to promote shoots and branches

The varieties of roses with medium and soft branches are very suitable for pressing branches to promote the formation of shoots and new branches . For example, varieties such as Zhenzhou, Golden Celebration, Manet, and Bolero can all press down branches to promote shoots and branches.

For this kind of rose with vigorous growth, it is easier to grow new shoots by pressing the branches. Let’s see how flower lovers press the branches in various ways.

2. Wipe the buds and pinch the bamboo shoots

For example, Mona Lisa has many buds and tends to bud blindly, so the smaller and weaker buds have to be wiped out and nutrients concentrated on the stronger buds so that they can grow well.

The same goes for bamboo shoots. My Golden Celebration grows a lot of bamboo shoots. I'm busy at work, and then both weak and strong bamboo shoots grow together, growing in a mess. I go home and quickly trim and wipe off the weak ones.

3. Tip the basin and place it at an angle

For example, many roses have hard branches that snap when you pull them down. If this type of rose is potted, it is particularly suitable to put the pot upside down to break the apical dominance, which can also promote new shoots and branches.

4. Topping and picking flowers frequently to promote bamboo shoots

Spring, summer and autumn are suitable for topping, which is also to break the apical dominance and is suitable for the growth of strong shrubs. Topping large bamboo shoots promotes branching, and the stronger the bamboo shoots are.

However, the topping position should be lower so that the bamboo shoots will have enough stamina . By then, the height they grow will be close to the height of other branches, and the flowers will look better at the same height.

When blind buds are formed and the branches are already very long, it is difficult to turn blind buds into flower buds by fertilizing. At this time, you need to top the buds to allow new buds to grow again. If there are many short and weak blind buds, just cut them off. In addition, fertilize in time to allow the buds to grow smoothly .

5. Winter pruning

The purpose of winter pruning of rose bushes is generally to promote branching and control plant shape .

In winter, climbing roses are pulled horizontally and pruned, leaving only the first and second level branches, so that there are fewer blind buds . Then they are pulled horizontally and tied together, so that there will be many new branches in spring, and it is easy to grow shoots and have a large number of flowers.

6. What fertilizer should be used to promote the growth of rose shoots?

If the branches of roses are not strong enough and the leaves are thin and yellow, it is usually due to lack of fertilizer. At this time, the branching will definitely be poor and there will be few shoots. Generally, a balanced fertilizer of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium should be used, and it would be better if some trace elements are added.

7. Pulling leaves

If you need some low-lying buds, or a certain part of the body needs buds, you can pick all the leaves in that place and combine it with fertilization. The buds in this leafless place will be more likely to sprout new branches. The effect is very good, and the flower friends in the group have verified it.

8. Ground planting

Ground planting is the best way, there is no doubt about that. I will plant in the ground if conditions permit. Those that grow slowly are easier to produce shoots than those grown in pots, and the main thing is that they are easier to take care of than those grown in pots.

9. Don’t be short of water

Whether planted in the ground or in pots, if roses lack water, the newly grown shoots are likely to sprout blindly, and the seedlings in pots are small and easily dry out and die if they lack water.

In addition, it is easiest for bamboo shoots to grow when it rains. When it rains, I also let the potted plants get wet, and they seem to grow faster. Of course, if it rains for too long, you have to be careful not to let it rain for too long for black spot varieties.
