How to grow sugarcane to make it crisp and sweet (Sugarcane planting methods and cultivation techniques)

How to Plant and Manage Sugarcane

In the Jianghan Plain area, after mid-March, when the temperature is stable above 10℃, sugarcane can be planted . Sugarcane seeds are generally sugarcane harvested last year. There is a corn-sized bud at the node of the sugarcane. After the bud differentiates and grows, it becomes the sugarcane seedling. So, how to plant sugarcane to make it crisp and sweet?

Seed selection

When selecting sugarcane seeds, it is best to choose the kind with slightly raised buds. This kind of buds are beginning to sprout and have vitality, and will soon differentiate into flower buds.

Those with small buds are either still dormant or damaged. Those that have fully differentiated and sprouted are not suitable for selection because the young buds are easily broken during the transportation of sugarcane seeds.

Digging trenches

Dig several straight trenches on the ridges where sugarcane is planted, and dredge both ends of the trenches to ensure there is a drain to prevent water from accumulating when it rains.

Although the roots of sugarcane are very strong, they are very short and grow horizontally in the shallow layer of the soil. In addition, the sugarcane stalks are high, so the sugarcane is easy to fall over. Therefore, the sugarcane must be planted in trenches and buried while the rows are cultivated , so that the roots of the sugarcane are stable.

Planting

After the trench is dug, the sugarcanes are planted one by one in the trench. The sugarcanes should be placed steadily and straight, without pressing the buds underneath, and the buds should be placed on both sides as much as possible to facilitate germination.

When placing the sugarcane, we should pay attention to check whether there are no buds on the sugarcane or the buds are damaged. When planting, we should fill in the sugarcane segments with buds to avoid lack of seedlings in the later stage.

Covering the soil

After the sugarcane seeds are placed, a layer of residue fertilizer made from various straws is first spread on them . The residue fertilizer is safe and nutritious, and can loosen the soil, which is conducive to the emergence of sugarcane buds. Then cover the residue fertilizer with a layer of soil . The soil should be broken up and not too thick. Just apply a thin layer.

Cover film

Finally, cover the trench where the sugarcane is planted with a film to keep warm and prevent soil from falling. Burying the sugarcane too deep will affect the emergence of the seedlings. When covering the film, try to tighten it as the tip of the sugarcane buds will easily pierce the film and drill out after they emerge from the soil .
