Pumpkin is a vegetable that many people like to eat. It tastes sweet and delicious, and there are many varieties. It is an excellent vegetable suitable for all ages, and it can be found in both the north and the south. However, the temperature in the north is lower, so it is generally planted in greenhouses, while in the south, there are no such concerns.

Greenhouse pumpkin planting time

The planting time for pumpkins is from January to March in spring and from July to August in autumn , because the temperature and climate at this time are most suitable for the growth of pumpkins. If pumpkins are planted in a greenhouse, the sowing time can be slightly advanced.

Greenhouse pumpkin sowing and planting

1. Soil

When planting greenhouse pumpkins, it is best to choose sandy loam soil. The plot should be selected where pumpkins have not been planted before. Before sowing, apply base fertilizer, mainly natural organic fertilizer, which must be thoroughly decomposed before use. In addition, add some compound fertilizer appropriately.

2. Planting

Pumpkin seeds need to be placed outside in the sun for two days before sowing, then soaked in warm water for three hours to germinate. After the seeds turn white, they can be sown.

3. Seedling cultivation

After sowing, pay attention to maintaining the temperature at 25-30℃, and the night temperature at 12-15℃. After watering thoroughly, provide proper ventilation and transplant the melon seedlings when the temperature rises and the seedlings have 3 to 4 true leaves.

4. Planting

Before planting pumpkins in the greenhouse, apply enough organic fertilizer, dig planting holes, and use deep trenches and high ridges to plant. Plant one plant in each planting hole, and pay attention to covering and watering to ensure that the seedlings can grow quickly.

Key points for greenhouse pumpkin management

1. Topdressing

Since the pumpkin fruit is relatively large, in addition to the previous base fertilizer, top dressing should be applied when the vine grows to three centimeters, and then a second top dressing should be applied when the fruit grows rapidly.

2. Topping and flower picking

There is one thing you need to pay attention to during the flowering period. The first flowers are male flowers and they need to be removed first. Female flowers will grow later. During this period, pay attention to appropriate flower thinning so that nutrients can be concentrated on the pumpkin fruits.

3. Build the melon rack

During the growth of pumpkins, building the vines to the required length can effectively increase the fruit setting rate and prevent the pumpkins from rotting. Generally speaking, when the pumpkin vines grow to 3 meters, they need to be guided to the racks.

4. Remove yellow leaves

On the vines that have already bloomed and borne fruit, generally as soon as the vines bloom and bear fruit, there will be yellow leaves. If you see them, you should pick them off in time. This will reduce the consumption of nutrients and you will produce more pumpkins.

5. Harvest

When the honey pumpkin is fully ripe, the body will turn orange-yellow, and this is the best time to harvest it. Be careful to handle it with care.
