How to prune beech trees

When to prune beech trees

Beech trees should be pruned during the growing season in early summer and the dormant period in winter, but it is best to do it during the dormant period in winter, when pruning will cause the least damage to the plant.

Beech tree pruning

The root system of beech trees is generally pruned to 3~5cm for the main root and 3~6cm for the lateral roots. Damaged and diseased roots should be removed, and the incisions should be smooth and not rough. Secondly, the pruning of branches and leaves should reduce water transpiration, maintain water balance between the ground and underground parts, and maintain the dominance of the top of the trunk.

For beech seedlings with damaged main shoots, choose the strong side branch closest to the trunk as the main trunk, shorten other side branches appropriately, and then trim away thin branches from the main trunk, making a smooth cut and cutting off 1/2 of the length of all main branches.

Beech Tree Pruning Tips

As the age of the beech tree increases, the basic branches of 1/3 of the tree height should be trimmed every year from the 2nd to 3rd year, and pruned several times. The height below the main branches should be maintained at 2.5~3m, and the inner branches, crossed branches, parallel branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, and dead branches should be removed in time.

Shaping and pruning of beech trees should maintain appropriate branch points and a full crown. According to the growth momentum of the seedlings, 1 to 2 branches should be cut from the main trunk from bottom to top every year before the leaf buds sprout, so as to gradually increase the branch points of the seedlings and maintain the growth advantage of the main trunk.

Beech tree pruning precautions

Pruning the branches and leaves of beech trees in spring is also one of its cultivation methods and precautions. It is necessary to immediately remove the miscellaneous branches on the beech trees to make the plants grow better and improve their aesthetics.
