Sichuan pepper is native to my country, with North China and the south of Northwest China as the main production areas, and Shaanxi, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, and Sichuan as the most abundant. Sichuan pepper has a wide range of uses and is a good seasoning. It can be planted once and harvested for many years, with high economic benefits. The best seasons for transplanting pepper seedlings are spring and winter. Spring cultivation should be carried out when the buds of the pepper seedlings begin to sprout. Fill the cultivation pit with moist soil first and water it when conditions permit. In winter, the plants can be planted around the beginning of winter. To prevent frost damage, they can be cut and transplanted. After planting, they can be piled up with soil, and then removed after the thaw in the spring of the following year. In northern China, due to the cold winter, it is generally planted in spring, while in some areas such as Shandong and Qinghai, it is transplanted in the rainy season. The planting site for pepper should be selected in the middle and lower part of the sunny slope or semi-sunny slope, with open terrain, deep and loose soil, and good drainage. Mountain tops, low-lying areas prone to waterlogging, sandy soil and heavy clay soil are not suitable for planting. The soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral. It can be planted in front of and behind houses, along ditches and fields. Dig a pit with a diameter of 30 cm and a depth of 25 cm in a selected place, pick out the stones and grass roots in the pit, then fill in an appropriate amount of moist soil, and then place the pepper seedlings upright in the center of the pit to allow the roots of the pepper seedlings to stretch out, fill the soil in layers and compact it. Where conditions permit, water the soil after planting to ensure that the roots are fixed. Weeding is required during inter-row cultivation. The root system of Sichuan pepper is shallow, and "if the Sichuan pepper is not weeded, it will wither and die that year." After cultivation, the soil should be loosened and weeded once in spring and summer and after the Sichuan pepper is harvested. Top dressing is required. Nitrogen fertilizer is mainly applied during the period from budding to flowering. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are mainly applied during the vigorous growth period of new shoots after fruit setting. Organic fertilizer can be applied once after the fruit is harvested and before the leaves fall. The tree can be shaped into a natural open-heart shape, a bushy shape, or a round-head shape. Pruning can be done after the fruit is harvested and before budding in the spring of the following year. |
