How and when to plant garlic

Garlic planting time and month

Garlic planting has two planting seasons: spring garlic and autumn garlic. Spring garlic is suitable for sowing in February, with a growth cycle of 90 to 100 days. Autumn garlic is suitable for planting in August and September, with a growth cycle of 200 to 270 days. Because the seedlings need to go through the entire winter, the time is slightly longer.

Spring garlic planting

Garlic is generally suitable for sowing in mid-February and harvesting in early June. When planting garlic in spring, you should choose appropriate varieties. It is best to choose Yingxian garlic, Acheng purple garlic, Tianjin six-petal red garlic, Jimusar white garlic, etc. The choice of variety can be based on local customary varieties.

Summer garlic planting

It is recommended to plant in August in summer. The garlic cloves need to be processed. You can peel off the aging skin on the outside to avoid bacteria. You can also use fungicides such as carbendazim to soak the cloves and then sow them normally.

Planting garlic in autumn

Garlic can be planted in August and September, and the garlic heads can be harvested between May and mid-to-late June of the following year. When sowing garlic in autumn, the seed cloves can be soaked in advance to make them germinate faster, kill bacteria and reduce diseases. They can be soaked in carbendazim and lime water for 12 hours, rinsed with clean water and then sown.

Winter garlic planting

In winter, it can be planted in January or February. Before planting, deep plowing and preparation of the land should be done, and fully decomposed organic fertilizer should be used as the main fertilizer. Sufficient base fertilizer should be applied. Watering can be done once half a month after sowing, which is conducive to the growth of garlic roots.

Garlic Planting Methods

First, choose a suitable local garlic variety according to the temperature of the planting site, and then soak the garlic cloves in advance according to the season. This will ensure that the seedlings emerge neatly and germinate early, and can kill bacteria and reduce diseases. You can soak them in carbendazim and lime water for 12 hours, then rinse them with clean water before sowing.

Deeply plow and prepare the land before planting, and apply fully decomposed organic fertilizer. When planting, plant straight and steady. It will take 7 to 8 days for the seeds to sprout and emerge from the soil. Water the seedlings once every half a month or so after sowing, which is beneficial to the growth of the garlic root system. Before freezing, you can water them once for the winter and apply flushing fertilizer once to ensure the yield in the next year.
