How to prune rose branches Tips for pruning rose branches

The best time to prune roses is in autumn or winter. Pruning branches is a very important step, and the cut rose branches can be used for cuttings and planting. Before winter, all dry branches of roses need to be pruned off to save nutrients and allow for more concentrated delivery of nutrients.

After the spring, some old branches should be cut off. After new buds sprout, the new buds at the top of the main branches should be pinched to ensure that the new branches have sufficient nutrients.

How to prune roses

1. Dormant period

Before the roses go dormant, remove all remaining flowers, dead branches and rotten leaves on the plants, prune the lush branches and leaves that affect the density in time, and also prune the weak branches and leaves. This can promote the healthy growth of the plants and increase their ornamental value.

2. Growth period

During its growing season, branches and leaves that grow too fast should be pruned in time, all overgrown useless branches should be cleared away, and branches and leaves that grow vigorously should be lightly pruned to promote the sprouting of new branches and leaves, speed up the flowering process, increase the flowering yield, and improve the flowering quality.

Rose pruning precautions

Roses should be trimmed not only for branches, but also for buds. Choose the buds that grow well next to them and cut them down about 6 to 7 mm above them, keeping them parallel to the direction of the leaf buds. It is even more important to leave the leaf buds that extend outward, otherwise they will extend inward and grow into branches, which will affect ventilation.
