How to divide Areca palm

How to divide Areca palm

Time for dividing the palm tree

Areca palm, also known as yellow coconut and purple palm, is a plant of the palm family and the genus Areca palm. It can be propagated by division all year round, but the best time is April in spring. It can be combined with repotting for faster recovery.

Method of propagation of Areca palm by division

The base of the Areca palm will produce many small plants. You can remove it from the pot, remove some of the old culture soil, and use sharp scissors to divide the base into 2 to several clumps. Each clump needs to have a root system, preferably 2-3 small plants.

Steps for dividing Areca palm

Select a Areca palm with many tillers at the base, remove it from the pot in advance, then divide the base connection into several clumps, and apply wood ash or sulfur powder on the cut for disinfection.

The small plants of Areca palm can be planted after their wounds have healed. For newly planted plants, since their root systems have not yet developed well, they cannot tolerate strong light or long-term exposure to light. It is best to give them diffuse light and appropriate amount of watering. You can spray more water to keep it moist, and provide a temperature of 20-25 degrees, so that they can recover faster.

Areca palm likes a humid environment. The principle of watering is to keep the soil dry and wet. Water more in dry and hot seasons, and water less in cold and rainy weather. Keep the soil in the pot moist at all times. In addition, the air is dry in summer, so you need to spray water appropriately to maintain a high air humidity, but the soil in the pot should not be too wet to avoid root rot.
