Where do lychees grow?

The origin of litchi is the subtropical region in southern my country, where the annual average temperature is between 20-23°C. Due to the strict temperature requirements, the cultivation and distribution of litchi are limited. Litchi is suitable for growing in sandy loam with loose soil and deep soil layer, and it should not be planted in places with strong winds.

Lychee is native to China and is a very famous fruit in the Lingnan region. Lychee is also widely distributed, for example, in the southwest, south and southeast of China, Guangdong and southern Fujian, Guangxi, Sichuan, Taiwan and Hainan. In addition to Asia, it is also grown in small parts in Africa, America and Oceania.

Lychee growing environment

1. Growth temperature

The most suitable temperature for litchi growth is between 23-29℃. Temperatures below 12℃ will affect the growth and development of litchi. Short-term cold weather in winter can inhibit vegetative growth and promote the differentiation of flower buds. Litchi will only begin to bloom when the temperature reaches above 10℃ in spring. It blooms most abundantly between 18-24℃. It will suffer from low temperature damage if the temperature is below 0℃, but adult trees can withstand lower temperatures when there is no growth activity.

2. Precipitation

Litchi needs sufficient water to grow, requiring an annual rainfall of more than 1,200 mm. The annual rainfall in the main production areas in South China reaches more than 1,500 mm. If it encounters low temperature and rainy weather during its flowering and young fruiting period, it will cause a large number of flowers and fruits to fall, or even a total loss of harvest.
