How to plant shallots and when to plant them

Suitable time for planting shallots

Shallots are suitable for planting in summer. Generally, they are planted from July to September. The best planting time is mid-to-late August. The temperature varies according to the annual climate changes. The specific planting of shallots needs to be determined according to the specific climatic conditions.

Methods and key points of planting shallots

1. Fertilization and land preparation

When planting shallots, you need to choose a place with sufficient sunlight, deep and fertile sandy loam as the planting area of red onions. Before planting, you need to apply enough base fertilizer. You can use farmers' rotted soil and a small amount of superphosphate as base fertilizer.

When preparing the land, you need to completely break up and rake the soil clods to ensure that the soil is fine, the furrows are flat and fertilized evenly. Finally, spray a small amount of herbicide on the top of the soil to prevent grass from growing.

2. Seed selection and sowing

When selecting seeds, you should choose shallots that are not damaged and in good shape. This will ensure that the shallots can fully absorb nutrients during the growth process. When sowing, it is recommended to use the shallow planting method. It is most appropriate to put the shallots 2/3 to 3/4 into the soil, so that the shallots can grow better.

Key points for daily management of shallots

After sowing the shallots, they need to be watered thoroughly once to make the soil completely wet. When the shallot seedlings are about 10 cm tall, a small amount of fertilizer can be applied to promote root growth and, after that, topdressing can be applied once every 10 days. During the seedling stage, it is necessary to prevent the heads from becoming swollen. It is recommended to water them once every 1 to 2 days.
