When to prune the plum tree and how to prune it for the first time

When to prune the plum tree and how to prune it for the first time

1. Pruning time

1. Winter pruning: When pruning beauty plum in winter, the main focus is on shaping, and the method is also very simple. The main thing is to cut off some branches that grow crosswise, are attacked by diseases and insects, and grow relatively long. Newly planted seedlings should be heavily pruned in winter. Not only should some branches with poor growth be thinned out, but branches that are too long should also be shortened.

2. Pruning after flowering: After the beauty plum has finished blooming, proper pruning can make the flowering branches grow better. After flowering, the dry and old branches should be pruned short, and 3-4 buds should be cut off at the base, which will promote the growth of new branches.

2. The first pruning method

The first pruning of the beauty plum is to pinch the top. When the plant grows to about 40cm, cut off the top part. The purpose of doing this is to control the growth height of the plant, allow the axillary buds to grow fuller, and suppress the wild growth of branches. The amplitude of pruning should be controlled well. It is best to adjust it appropriately according to the growth of the beauty plum. Plants with good growth can be pruned more heavily, but if the growth is poor, they must be pruned lightly.
