Cowpea planting time

The planting period of cowpea is relatively long, from April to July. This plant prefers a warm climate. If it is planted in low temperature seasons, the seeds may not take root and germinate. Even if seedlings grow, they may be frostbitten, affecting the subsequent growth of the plant.

Cowpea planting methods and key points

1. Seed selection and germination

The germination rate of cowpea itself is relatively high, and generally no germination is required. If germination is required, the seeds can be soaked in water to allow it to fully absorb water. Then take it out, wash off the mucus on the surface, and wrap it with clean wet gauze. Place it in an environment with a temperature of 25-28℃, and it will generally germinate in 1-2 days.

2. Select the site and apply fertilizer

Planting cowpea requires choosing a suitable growing environment. Its root system is relatively short, so it should be planted in loose soil. Before planting, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied. Fertilizer is usually organic fertilizer, which is applied to the soil and deep plowing is carried out. The depth is generally about 30 cm. After 3-4 days, ridges should be formed.

3. Sowing

Sow the cowpea seeds into the prepared soil pits. Usually, each pit should be about 30-32 cm apart, and 3-4 seeds should be placed in it. After sowing, cover it with 3 cm of soil and water it appropriately. After it grows leaves, you need to prepare for thinning and reseeding, and during the growth process, you also need to build a rack to guide the vines.

Cowpea planting precautions

In addition to the base fertilizer used in the cowpea soil before planting, it needs to be fertilized again every month. When it grows, it has a relatively large demand for phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, so you can increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers when fertilizing. In addition to root fertilizer, it also needs to use foliar fertilizer to avoid yellow leaves.
