Ginkgo cutting time and method

Ginkgo cutting time

If you want to take cuttings of ginkgo trees, it is recommended to do so in March or April. There are two main reasons for this. First, the temperature has risen and the climate is suitable for the survival of cuttings. Second, this is the growing season of the plant, and the cut cuttings can grow quickly and survive.

Ginkgo cutting method

1. Prepare the substrate

Ginkgo can easily survive in moist and breathable sandy soil, sandy soil, and river sand. You can choose river sand, vermiculite, and perlite, mix them evenly in a ratio of 6:2:2, and use them as the cutting medium.

2. Select cuttings

Select 1-2 year old high-quality disease-free branches with a length of 15-20 cm, cut off some leaves, retain 2-3 tender leaves on the top, and make an oblique cut at the bottom. After cutting, wash them with clean water, soak them in rooting water for about 60 minutes, take them out and dry them and wait for cuttings.

3. Cuttings

Prepare a clay pot, fill it with the prepared culture soil, about 60%-80% (don't fill it too full), smooth the soil, insert the ginkgo cuttings into the substrate, water until the soil is moist, place it in a shaded and ventilated place for maintenance, and wait for rooting.

Ginkgo cutting maintenance

After the ginkgo is grafted, it should be covered with a shade net, especially when the light is strong. If there is no shade, the water will evaporate quickly, which is not conducive to its rooting. In addition, the air must be kept moist, which can also reduce water loss. After it takes root, it can be transplanted to another place, and the roots must be accompanied by the soil ball during transplantation.
