How to prune lilies and what to pay attention to

Lily pruning time

Lilies can be pruned three times a year, mainly during the growing season, flowering season and dormant season. Pruning has two main purposes: one is to make the shape more beautiful and improve its ornamental value; the other is to promptly cut off diseased, dead and thin branches, which can make the plant grow more vigorously and extend its life.

How to prune lilies

1. Growth period

Lilies can be pruned during the growing season. Use sharp scissors to cut off branches that grow too densely to increase light transmittance. Also, cut off the overgrown branches and leaves of the lilies to prevent the plants from growing too tall and being unable to bloom and bear fruit normally.

2. Flowering period

Lilies can be pruned during their flowering period by cutting off the withered flowers and branches and leaves that have been damaged by diseases and insect pests, so that the plants can differentiate flower buds again and bloom. After pruning, apply wood ash and carbendazim to the wounds to eliminate bacteria and allow the plants to resume healthy growth.

3. Dormant period

After the lily enters its dormant period, it must also be pruned. Use sterilized scissors to cut off all branches and leaves above the roots of the lily to reduce nutrient consumption. After pruning, place it in a warm environment indoors to allow the plant to successfully pass through its dormant period.

4. Notes

When pruning lilies, the scissors must be disinfected to prevent the plants from being infected by bacteria and the wounds from failing to heal. After pruning, the lilies must be watered once to soak all the soil, and then phosphorus and potassium fertilizers must be mixed into the soil to provide the lilies with sufficient nutrients.
