When is the best time to sow hollyhocks?

Hibiscus mallow is also known as Yizhanghong, Dashuji and Rongkui. It is a biennial upright herb, up to 2 meters high, with stems and branches densely covered with prickles. It can be sown after the seeds are mature in August and September, and it will bloom the following year. If sown in spring, it is not easy to bloom in the same year. It usually seedlings emerge 7 days after sowing and should be lightly covered in winter to prevent cold.

Hollyhock flower sowing and propagation method

Hollyhock is usually propagated by sowing, but it can also be propagated by division and cutting. Division is carried out in spring, and cutting is only used to propagate certain fine varieties. Sowing is the main method of production, and spring sowing is the main method in North China.

Sowing: In North China, the seeds are usually sown and the flowers bloom in the same year.

Division: Division propagation can be carried out from August to September. Dig up the old plant, divide the stem buds with fibrous roots and replant them. Water thoroughly after planting immediately, and it will bloom the following year.

Cuttings: Cuttings can be made in spring from stems that have sprouted at the base. The cuttings are 7 to 8 cm long, with sand as the substrate. After cuttings, shade is applied until roots are formed.

When do hollyhocks bloom?

The flowering period of hollyhock is from May to September every year. If you plant it in the first year, it will bloom in the second year, and it can bloom for many years in a row. Hollyhocks sown in September will continue to grow and develop in the second year. If the flowering period is missed when it matures, you can only see the flowers in the third year. However, if you use the method of division and cutting, you can see the flowers bloom in the same year. It grows very fast.
