When is the best time to repot orchids?

Orchid repotting time

If the orchid is not repotted for a long time, it will gradually stop growing leaves and blooming. Repotting can increase the air permeability of the soil for the plant, replenish nutrients in the soil, and be more conducive to the growth of the plant. However, newly purchased orchids generally do not need to be repotted.

It is best to repot orchids in March and April in spring, and September and October in autumn. It is sufficient to repot them once every two years. The temperature should be controlled at 15-25℃. The activity of the plant roots is most vigorous at around 20℃.

Orchid repotting methods and steps

1. Treatment before repotting

It is best to cut off the watering of the orchid in advance before repotting it, which will help the plant to be removed from the pot. Then knock on the four sides of the pot, carefully take out the plant, remove the surrounding soil, and expose the root system.

2. Prepare the flower pot

The choice of flowerpot needs to be based on the number of orchid plants and the health of the orchid seedlings. Generally, it can be about one size larger than the previous pot. Pay attention to the air permeability of the flowerpot material.

3. Choose soil matrix

The new soil prepared for orchids must be loose, breathable, and well-drained. You can use peat soil, peat soil, or garden soil, or you can buy special soil for orchids.

4. Basin operation

After the orchid is potted, fill the soil, then gently press the surrounding soil, water it thoroughly in time, and then place it in a ventilated and cool environment for maintenance. During the acclimatization period, be careful not to let a large amount of water accumulate in the soil.
