What should I do if the orchid leaves I bought are dehydrated (can the orchid leaves be saved if they are severely dehydrated)

What to do if the leaves of orchids purchased online are a little dehydrated

In fact, this situation usually occurs during long-distance mailing, and the orchid's moisturizing and freshness preservation are not done well.

If there is a problem in any link of removing the orchid from the pot, packaging, or transportation, it may cause it to lose water or be damaged, making it difficult to resume growth after being planted in a pot.

Therefore, when orchid lovers buy orchids online, they should not only look at the beautiful pictures, but also choose orchid breeding bases with high credibility and actual orchid displays to buy orchids.

The key to the survival rate of orchids during the mailing process is moisturizing.

Because express delivery may take a few days at the shortest and ten days to half a month at the longest. If there are no good moisturizing measures, the orchid will not get water and nutrients, and the orchid leaves will inevitably lose water. When it reaches your hands, the preservative filler will often have dried up.

If the dehydration is mild, the orchid leaves will be weak and the luster of the leaves will be reduced or lost; if the dehydration is severe, the leaves will wilt, the leaves will be slightly wrinkled or curled, and the orchid roots will shrink and shrunken.

What should we do if the orchids we buy encounter this situation? What issues should we pay attention to? The following points should be done.

1) Give the dehydrated orchid a little water

Soak the dehydrated orchid plant in three-centimeter-deep clean water for 1 to 2 hours. After its roots and leaves absorb some water, hang the orchid plant upside down in a cool and well-ventilated place.

After the water has dried slightly, plant it in a pot with semi-dry planting material and place it in a cool and humid place for maintenance.

2) Do a good job of moisturizing maintenance and management

If conditions permit, it is best to maintain the air humidity in the orchid environment at 70%~80%. If conditions do not permit, spray the orchid leaves once every hour, and it should be best if no water droplets flow from the orchid leaves.

Or you can use a transparent plastic bag to cover the orchid plant and the pot, and poke a dozen small holes on the top of the plastic bag with a needle for ventilation.

Try not to water too deeply during the moisturizing period. After taking moisturizing measures for 20 to 30 days, place the orchid pot in a ventilated place with scattered light for maintenance.

3) Matters that require attention

Remember not to fertilize orchids that have lost water. If you fertilize too early, it will easily cause the orchid's foot leaves and heart leaves to turn black, causing root rot and seedling death.

Therefore, special attention should be paid to fertilizer damage to orchids that are injured due to dehydration. It is best to wait until the new leaf buds grow to 5 cm in height, and then apply thin fertilizer once a month. Only after the seedlings have grown slowly for more than half a year can normal fertilization and maintenance be carried out.
