How to prune the roots of Elm

Does the elm need root pruning?

Root pruning and potting of Ulmus pumila

After pruning the roots and removing the soil, comb the roots and wash them at the same time. In order to adapt to the new pot, the roots must be cut short. Cut the thicker and straighter roots short to promote the differentiation of fine roots and form a good transition. Cut off the roots that are not in the right position and cross. When filling the soil, use chopsticks to poke the soil in the pot firmly. After watering thoroughly, the repotting work is completed.

Root washing: When pruning the roots of Elm, the scissors should be disinfected, and roots that are too long and thick should be cut short. Large wounds can be disinfected with wood ash or protected with erythromycin. Before repotting, water should be controlled appropriately to facilitate removal from the pot. When cleaning the soil around the roots, care should be taken to minimize damage to the roots. Move gently and use a bamboo stick to gently remove the soil.

How long to pot it: After pruning the roots of the Chinese elm, it cannot be potted immediately. It must be left for a few hours to form a protective film to ensure the survival of the pile.

Maintenance of Elm after root pruning and repotting

Watering: Do not water the Elm immediately after repotting as this will cause the sap to run away easily. Generally, water the plant once every 2-3 days to allow the root cut to dry out on its own and keep the upper part moist.

Sunbathing: If you transplant the elm with soil, keep it moist and expose it to the sun at any time. But try not to expose it to too much sun. Prevent the roots from being damaged and the water absorption from the sun not being enough. If you transplant it with new soil, do not expose it to the sun for about a week.
