How long does it take for osmanthus cuttings to take root?

Rooting time of osmanthus cuttings

It is recommended to carry out osmanthus cuttings between May and July or September and October. The climate and temperature in these two time periods are more suitable, which is conducive to rooting. It will be easier to manage after cutting. At this time, the new shoots have stopped growing, nutrients are more sufficient, and the rooting speed will be faster.

Generally, after a period of time, you can judge whether the osmanthus has survived and taken root by observing its growth. If the branches show no signs of growth and the leaves begin to turn yellow and wither, it means that it has not survived and taken root. If the cuttings not only begin to grow but also sprout new buds, it means that they have taken root.

If a suitable growth environment is provided after osmanthus cuttings, it will generally begin to take root in about 20 days, and after a month the roots will basically be grown and leaves will begin to grow.

Osmanthus cutting rooting method

1. Prepare the substrate: Osmanthus is suitable for planting in loose, breathable, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy soil, which can take root faster and is also good for future growth.

2. Cuttings processing: Choose strong, disease-free semi-lignified branches with a length of 10 to 12 cm. It is best to prune them in the morning or evening or on cloudy days. The lower end can be cut obliquely, and the leaves at the lower part can be cut off.

3. Inserting into the soil: The lower end of the osmanthus cuttings can be dipped in rooting powder. After inserting into the soil, water it thoroughly. It is best to cover it with plastic film, which can have the effect of heat preservation and moisturizing, allowing the osmanthus cuttings to take root faster.

4. Rooting maintenance: After the cuttings are completed, control the soil humidity at around 50%, provide appropriate shade, and place the cuttings in a place with sufficient scattered light. It should not be completely dark and should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Just wait for the roots to take shape.

Osmanthus cutting management

1. After the osmanthus is grafted, it needs to be shaded and maintained under diffuse light. It cannot be exposed to sunlight. After the rhizomes grow, the osmanthus can be exposed to the sun.

2. About 10 days after the osmanthus cuttings, you can spray a low concentration of potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution on the leaves to promote its growth.

3. After the osmanthus cuttings, you can water it once to keep the soil slightly moist. Then water it every 3-5 days. Too much watering will affect the growth of new roots and even cause root rot.
