How to prune the roots of chrysanthemums

Do chrysanthemums need root pruning?

Before planting chrysanthemums, the roots must be trimmed. The old, weak, diseased and residual roots must be trimmed to ensure that the plants can grow better after being potted.

Do not trim the roots of newly purchased chrysanthemum seedlings when transplanting, and in order to increase the survival rate of acclimatization, transplant them with soil.

Hydroponic chrysanthemum root pruning

Chrysanthemums grown in water need to have their roots trimmed. Use sterilized scissors to cut the roots into a 45-degree angle to increase the contact area between the roots and water. Also, pick off the densely packed leaves. Be careful not to leave any leaves on the water surface, otherwise the growth of the chrysanthemums will deteriorate.

Root pruning and potting of chrysanthemum

1. Prepare potting soil: When planting chrysanthemums, you need to prepare suitable potting soil for maintenance. Choose loose, fertile, and permeable sandy soil for maintenance. In order to prevent the plants from rotting, the soil must be sterilized.

2. Root pruning: Before planting chrysanthemums, the roots must be pruned, and old, weak, diseased, and damaged roots must be cut off. After pruning the roots, the incision must be disinfected. You can apply appropriate wood ash and then place it in a cool place. Wait until the wound is dry before planting.

3. Potted plants: Put the processed chrysanthemums into the soil and fill the pot with soil. After planting the chrysanthemums, observe the dryness and humidity of the soil. If the soil is dry, spray water appropriately.

Washing the roots of chrysanthemums after root pruning

Wash the roots of the chrysanthemum and gently shake the original soil. Do not rub them like washing clothes, and do not soak the roots in water. Although this will wash faster and cleaner, it will only lead to the death of the chrysanthemum.

Drying the roots of chrysanthemums after root pruning

After pruning the roots of the chrysanthemum, you need to put it in a ventilated place to let its roots dry. Generally, you can put it in the pot after drying it in the sun for a few hours. In order to prevent the wound from getting infected, you can also apply some wood ash on the wound.

Maintenance of chrysanthemum after root pruning and repotting

After the chrysanthemum has its roots trimmed and the pot repotted, when the soil in the pot is dry, water it to keep it moist so that the roots can be closely combined with the new soil, which helps the roots absorb and grow. If its wound has not healed yet, do not water it.

It is best to place the newly repotted chrysanthemums in a semi-shaded and ventilated environment so that they receive an appropriate amount of scattered light. If the light is too strong, it will cause them to appear dry and wilt. Only after they adapt to the new environment can the light be gradually increased.
