Can grapefruit trees be potted?

The pomelo tree can be planted in a smaller pot, and one tree can produce several large fruits. Potted pomelo is usually grafted with citrus aurantium as the rootstock, which can dwarf the tree shape. After it survives, it can be potted. It can be said that potted planting and ground planting each have their advantages and disadvantages, and you can choose according to actual conditions.

In the first year, potted pomelo can be planted in a 20/30cm pot. When it grows to about 2m, you can use an 80cm to 100cm pot. If the potted pomelo tree is a grafted seedling, it can bear fruit in the same year. If it is a seedling, it will take about 5-8 years to bear fruit.

How to grow grapefruit trees in pots

1. Soil preparation

Pomelo is not very demanding on the soil. As long as the soil layer is deep, the soil pH is between 5.5-7.0, and the drainage is good, it can be planted, but sandy loam is best for planting.

2. Pruning

The best time to prune potted grapefruit trees is during the young tree period. Except for the extension branches of the main and secondary branches, the fruiting base branches or branch groups are generally pinched out at 20 cm to promote branching and form a compact crown. For upright branches, leggy branches, and branches that disrupt the tree shape, pinch or pull them out early.

3. Watering

Almost most plants do not like stagnant water, but the rootstock of pomelo tree, trifoliate orange, has strong adaptability, so watering should be based on the principle of "better to have nothing than to have nothing rotten".

4. Fertilization

When fertilizing potted grapefruit trees, you should follow the principle of applying small amounts of fertilizer frequently. If you are planting in the north, you can consider adding wood ash.

5. Pollination

Although grapefruit is hermaphroditic, the fruit-bearing rate will be increased if appropriate artificial pollination is assisted. That is, the stamens and pistils of the flower are brought into contact with each other, allowing the pollen to spread to each other, and pollination can be completed.
