Introduction to Sichuan Pepper

Zanthoxylum bungeanum is a deciduous small tree of the Rutaceae family and the Zanthoxylum genus. It blooms in April and May and bears fruit in August, September or October. Zanthoxylum bungeanum is also called 檓, big pepper, Qin pepper, and Shu pepper. Common varieties include Dahongpao pepper, Jiuyeqing pepper, and Dahong pepper.

The Chinese prickly ash tree likes a warm, humid and sunny environment. It is cold-resistant, drought-resistant and very resistant to pruning. It is suitable for planting in deep, fertile and well-drained loam and sandy loam. It is not waterlogged and short-term waterlogging can cause death.

Climate for growing pepper

Sichuan pepper is relatively cold-resistant and can withstand temperatures as low as minus 21 degrees Celsius. It is generally not affected by frost damage and can be planted in areas with an average annual temperature of 8 to 10 degrees. Sichuan pepper prefers an environment with plenty of sunlight, and generally requires no less than 1,800 hours of sunshine per year.

Suitable areas for growing pepper

Sichuan pepper is widely distributed in China, from the southern part of the Northeast to the northern slope of the Wuling Mountains, to the southeast to the coastal areas of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and to the southwest to the southeastern Tibet. It is not produced in Taiwan, Hainan and Guangdong, but is also cultivated in areas with an altitude of 2,500 meters.

Sichuan pepper can be planted in spring and autumn. The temperature in autumn is most suitable for planting Sichuan pepper. It can be sown at any stage of autumn. If sown in spring, you need to wait until April when the temperature rises.
