When is the best time to prune the photinia

Pruning effect

Pruning is of great significance for the Chinese photinia bonsai, whether it is to shape the beautiful plant shape or to promote the sprouting of new branches. After all, the Chinese photinia is a very ornamental bonsai tree species, and it remains evergreen all year round.

Pruning time

Practice has shown that it is better to prune the Chinese photinia bonsai after flowering or fruit falling. It can be pruned several times a year, and it is most appropriate to prune it twice a year, mainly in June in summer and October in autumn.

Photinia sempervivum pruning method

1. There is a corresponding relationship between the branches and root system of the Chinese photinia. The pruning process must take into account the balance of the bud force of the branches and leaves, especially the pruning of the outer branches and leaves. If the pruning degree in some places is too deep, it will often cause poor growth of the roots and affect the tree vigor.

2. Photinia chinensis is a tree species with strong germination ability and is relatively resistant to pruning. If you want to promote the germination of side branches, you need to pinch and top the branches in time to produce more side buds. The higher the frequency of pinching or topping, the denser the branches and leaves will grow.

3. Pruning generally needs to be combined with shaping, and it is necessary to cut off the long branches, overlapping branches, crossed branches, dead branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, etc. at any time. However, in the early autumn in southern regions, the temperature is high and the light intensity is high, so the bonsai should be placed in a cool place in time after pruning, and light should be provided after the new buds have a certain sun protection ability.

4. It should be noted that the digging work for the Chinese photinia strychnos spurge is mostly carried out from December of the current year to March of the following spring, and when the branches reach a length of about 15 cm, the excess branches should be removed and the overlong parts should be shortened.

Precautions for pruning photinia

For newly transplanted Chinese photinia, do not prune it immediately. You need to wait until it has been transplanted for a year or two before pruning it. This will not affect normal growth and will also make pruning easier. For Chinese photinia bonsai that is in stable growth and has already taken shape, it is generally necessary to leave it alone until the branches and leaves grow vigorously and the tree grows well before pruning.
