How to prune the lotus

When to prune the lotus

Lotus flowers generally do not need to be pruned. If pruning is required, there is no specific limit on the time of pruning. It can be done all year round, usually after flowering and after new buds sprout.

How to prune the branches of the lotus

1. Keep buds on seedlings : For plants that survive from cuttings or grafting, wipe off the side buds on the top and leaf scars, allow them to sprout from the base of the stems, and select evenly distributed purple-red strong buds to keep.

2. Control the height : When the stems of the potted lotus grow to about 30 cm, you need to trim the red growth points to keep them at the same height.

3. Cultivate plant type : Keep 20 stems of the lotus in a 30cm purple pot. Keep 3-4 strong buds in each growing season to ensure the nutrition of the remaining buds. Cut off the old and weak branches after flowering.

Lotus flower pruning tips

1. Wipe off the side buds : The lotus flower needs to be managed frequently during its growth period, and the upper side buds should be wiped off in time, leaving only the side buds in the pot soil and close to the soil.

2. Pinch off the new arrows : After the lotus arrowheads have grown into shape, they should be pruned in time, usually when they grow to 30 cm, and the tops of them should be pinched off directly to prevent secondary growth. If they are not pruned in time, the new arrows will be thicker and thinner, which is not very beautiful.

3. Prune old leaves : During the growth of the lotus, branches that have bloomed more than twice will slowly age and become woody, making it difficult to bloom. If you want to ensure that it blooms every year, you should prune off the old branches. After the flowers fade, prune off the old branches that have bloomed in time, and keep the others.

4. Thinning the branches : The lotus plant grows fast and vigorously. If there are too many main branches, it will affect the shape of the plant. You should thin the branches in time and cut off the overly dense branches. Only three or four main stems should be left in each pot of plants, and the rest should be cut off.

The lotus leaves grow faster after pruning

When pruning the lotus, the extra new lateral buds on the main stem should be cut off in time to prevent them from consuming excess nutrients and affecting the plant's bud formation and flowering. The lateral buds from the upper part should also be cut off, and the top should be properly capped so that the stem can be thick and plump and maintain uprightness.

Lotus flower pruning

When the lotus stem is in the growth period, sufficient nutrients and light should be provided so that the new stem can grow and take shape all at once. When it stops growing, the tip should be pinched off, and the old branches should be pruned away year by year in a planned manner. The old branches that have bloomed should be pruned away, and the others that can bloom can be retained.

Things to note when pruning lotus leaves

Time : When pruning the lotus, pay attention to the pruning time. It is usually done during the growing season, when the climate and temperature are more suitable and the wound can recover faster. Avoid winter, because the temperature is too low in winter, the wound is prone to frostbite, which can easily lead to the death of the plant.
Maintenance : After pruning the lotus, you should also pay attention to the subsequent maintenance. Pay attention to the issue of sunlight. It is best to water it once a day. At the same time, you should also provide nutrients in time according to different seasons to make the lotus grow better.
