How and when to plant radish

Radish planting time and month

Radish is a common vegetable in life and can be grown all year round, mainly in autumn and winter. The planting time of radish is related to the season and the planting site. Different planting sites have different climates and the planting time also varies.

When to plant radishes in spring

Radishes planted in spring can be harvested in early summer. The growth cycle is 25-60 days. They are widely planted in the vast areas north of the Yangtze River in China. In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, such as Shanghai, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, and Wuhan, Hubei Province, they are sown in February and March and harvested in April to early June.

When to plant radishes in summer

Radishes planted in summer are sown in May and June and harvested in July and August. If sown too early, they are prone to premature sprouting. Radishes are less drought-resistant in summer and have a high demand for water. They must be watered in time to maintain soil moistness, especially during the period when the fleshy roots are vigorous and hypertrophic.

When to plant radishes in autumn

Radishes planted in autumn are harvested in late October to early November. In the colder areas of the Northeast and Northwest, they are sown in early to mid-July and harvested in early to mid-October. In the high-altitude cold regions of the north, they need to be sown as early as mid-June and harvested in September-October. If the climate is suitable, the yield will be high and the quality will be good.

When to plant radishes in winter

Radishes are planted in winter, usually in early to mid-September. If they are planted too late and the ambient temperature is low, it will be difficult for leaf clusters to grow, and the growth rate will be insufficient and the yield will not be high.

Radish planting methods and steps

When planting radishes, if you are cultivating in the north in spring, summer, and autumn, if the temperature is low when the seeds germinate, or the seeds are too old and the sowing time is too early, it is very easy to cause the radish to bolt prematurely. Therefore, you should pay attention to choosing a variety with strong winter resistance, use new seeds for sowing, and control the sowing time.

1. Radishes are prone to hollow cores during planting, mainly because the fleshy roots of these radish varieties are too soft and expand too quickly. In addition, in the later stages of planting, improper water and fertilizer management, high temperature and drought, and too much nitrogen fertilizer and too little potassium fertilizer when fertilizing can also easily lead to hollow cores.

2. Root cracking is also a common problem in the growth process of radish. It is mainly caused by not watering the fleshy roots of radish in the early stage of expansion. Radish root cracking will have a great impact on the yield of radish and is also very detrimental to its quality.

Therefore, in order to prevent root cracking, we must pay attention to maintaining a uniform water supply during the expansion period of the radish fleshy roots, and apply boron fertilizer reasonably to improve the toughness of the radish fleshy roots.

3. Many people feel that radish has a spicy taste when eating it. This is caused by lack of nutrition and pests and diseases. The bitterness is mainly caused by applying too much nitrogen fertilizer and no phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Therefore, we must pay attention to strengthening fertilizer management and use scientific formulas for fertilization.
