How to prune rose buds

When to prune rose buds

Rose buds can be pruned in spring and autumn, but spring is better than autumn because after winter dormancy, roses begin to have some new branches, which is the best time for pruning.

For rose cuttings, choose strong branches grown in the current year, remove dead leaves, use plastic film to keep moist after cuttings, cover it at night to ventilate, keep the soil moist, and gradually increase the sunlight exposure time over about half a month so that roots will take shape faster.

Rose bud pruning

Rose buds usually begin to be heavily pruned in spring, and about 2/3 of the branches, old branches, diseased branches, weak branches, etc. of the entire plant need to be cut off to reduce nutrient consumption.

Leave 2 to 3 large leaves on each flowering branch of the rose, remove the inner branches, cross branches, dead branches, blind branches, and diseased branches to increase ventilation. It is best to prune lightly first and then shape them after pruning.

Rose bud pruning tips

Rose buds should be cut 1 cm above the axillary buds. If the branches grow too long, you can cut them about half way. This will not only improve the ornamental effect, but also allow better nutrient absorption.

Generally speaking, the side buds of roses have relatively poor development ability. You can start cutting off the side buds from here to make the main trunk develop better and promote rapid growth.

Rose bud pruning and flowering

Rose buds with insufficient plant shape should be pruned in the summer. The pruning position should be 1 cm above the top of the 5 leaflets, which is beneficial to the development of the plant and promotes the growth of flowers.

Notes on Rose Bud Pruning

As soon as the rose buds fall, the axillary buds begin to grow and form buds at the ends of the branches, so they should be pruned after each flowering to ensure that the plants grow strong and bloom profusely.
