Sugarcane breeding method

Sugarcane is propagated asexually. In general agricultural production life, new sugarcane plants are obtained by cuttings. Sugarcane seeds cannot reproduce.

The flowers and seeds of sugarcane are mainly used for reproduction. Using the flowering and fruiting of sugarcane is the main way for people to conduct sexual hybridization and breed new varieties.

Sugarcane breeding time

Sugarcane can be propagated in spring and autumn. Spring is generally from the end of January to mid-March, and it can be harvested from May to July. Autumn is from August to September, and harvested in mid-December.

Sugarcane breeding method

Sugarcane cutting propagation

Sugarcane cutting propagation is a commonly used method. The stems, leaves, roots, buds, etc. of the plant are selected as cuttings and inserted into fertile, loose sand or soil. After they take root, they can be planted to make them independent new plants. Sugarcane is often propagated by cuttings.

Sugarcane seed propagation

Choose sugarcane varieties with strong stress resistance, wide adaptability, strong perennial root ability, high yield and high sugar content. Apply base fertilizer to the soil and cover the ground with film when planting sugarcane in winter and early spring, which will have a significant effect on increasing yield and sugar content.

Sugarcane breeding precautions

After sugarcane is planted, not all of them will take root and sprout, and thinning may occur, so timely seedling replacement is necessary to ensure that the seedlings in the field are even and increase sugarcane production. It is best to choose rainy or cloudy days for seedling replacement, so that the survival rate will be much higher. From June to October, attention should be paid to waterlogging and drought prevention, and timely prevention and control of diseases and pests should be carried out.
