How to propagate peach

Method of breeding peach

In order to maintain the quality of the peach variety, we often choose grafting to propagate it.

How to graft peach

When we use the grafting method to propagate peach, we must first choose a peach plant with good growth conditions, and then choose Beech as the rootstock. We usually perform bud grafting or branch grafting in spring or summer, so that the survival rate of grafting can reach more than 90%. When budding in summer, you must first cut off the woody buds. Generally speaking, the suitable time for grafting is June to July in the south and July to August in the north. Cut the scion from the mother tree, trim the branches and leaves, leaving the petioles, and a little woody part on the inside of the bud. The stem should be three to five centimeters above the ground. Generally, the vertical part on the north side of the tree is selected. A suitable notch is cut in the bark, the scion is tightly fitted into the notch, and then it is wrapped with a rope to prevent the bud from drying out.

Maintenance and management after grafting

If the petiole of the scion turns yellow within half a month after grafting, it means the grafting is successful; if the petiole turns black, it means the plant has not survived. After making sure the graft has survived and the scion and rootstock are completely fused, we need to cut the rootstock one centimeter above the graft. After the new buds sprout, the rootstock should be completely wiped off. At the same time, fertilizer should be applied to promote the lignification of new buds so that the successfully grafted seedlings have the ability to withstand cold. After that, just pay attention to preventing and controlling aphids.
