How to Propagate Carnations

How to Propagate Carnations

How to reproduce carnations

The main ways to propagate carnations are cutting propagation, sowing propagation, and layering propagation. Carnation seeds can be propagated, and natural reproduction methods such as seed propagation and carnation cutting propagation are the fastest.

When do carnations reproduce?

Carnations can be propagated by cuttings at any time except July and August in summer. The best time for the highest survival rate is from autumn to early spring.

How to propagate carnations

1. Carnation division propagation

The time for carnation division propagation is generally before germination in early spring, or in autumn. Dig out the vigorously growing carnations, take 3 main branches as a clump, and then trim them open. Apply wood ash or sulfur on the wounds, place them in a ventilated place to dry the wounds, plant the divisions in pots, water them thoroughly, and place them in scattered light for maintenance. They will take root and sprout after about 30 days.

2. Carnation cutting propagation

Carnations can be propagated by cuttings from December to April of the following year. Choose side branches growing between the leaf axils in the middle of the branches, with a length of 7-10 cm. The cutting soil can be ordinary garden soil, rice husk ash, or sandy soil. After cutting, water frequently to maintain humidity and shade. The indoor temperature should be between 10-15 degrees. It will take about 20 days for roots to take root.

3. Carnation seed propagation

When the temperature reaches 20 degrees, carnations can be sown. Choose soil with good drainage as the substrate and place it in a cool and ventilated place. It will germinate in about 10-15 days. After germination, place it in the sun and do not expose it to sunlight.

4. How to propagate hydroponic carnations

The best container for carnation hydroponics is a narrow-mouthed bottle. Disinfect it in advance and choose strong and disease-free branches. The incision must be smooth and free of cracks. The lower leaves can be cut off. After the incision is dry, you can put it in the bottle and grow it in water. Change the water every 2 days when the temperature is high, and change the water every half a month at other times.

Precautions for carnation breeding

Carnations like loose, breathable soil with good fertilizer and water retention. The best planting soil is sandy loam. Do not use heavy and silted soil, which is not conducive to the growth of carnations. In addition, it likes a warm environment. The suitable growth temperature is between 19-21 degrees, and the temperature difference between day and night should be kept within 10 degrees.
