When to plant shallots

Shallots can be planted in all three seasons of the year, but no later than October, because the temperature gradually turns cooler after October, which is not conducive to the growth of shallots. Since shallots grow fast, they are planted by sowing in most areas.

Planting time in the north and south : The time for planting shallots in the north and south is different. In the Yangtze River Basin, shallots are generally sown in March and April and harvested in June and July. In the south, they are mostly sown in September and October and harvested in April and May of the following year. During this period, the market is supplied with unripe young seedlings, and the young leaves are mainly eaten.

Greenhouse planting time : Onions can be grown in greenhouses all year round, while open-field planting can only be done in spring, summer and autumn.

Shallot Origin and Planting Month

Shallots are widely grown in southern China, with common producing areas including Fujian, Yunnan, Guizhou and Jiangsu.

Fujian Shallot

The planting time of Fujian shallot is from April to May, and the maturity period is in summer. Fujian shallot has tall plants, solitary bulbs, and light-colored leaves, making it the best choice as a seasoning.

Yunnan shallot

Yunnan shallots are mainly planted in spring and autumn, and mature in summer and spring respectively. Yunnan shallots can bloom and bear fruit, and can be propagated by seeds, so their edible value is relatively high.
