How to grow coleus well

How to grow coleus well

Coleus growing conditions

Coleus has strong adaptability and can grow normally in acidic and alkaline soils, but it is most suitable for growing in fertile, loose, well-drained, humus-rich acidic soils. It likes a warm and humid environment, and the temperature in winter cannot be lower than 10 degrees. It likes plenty of sunlight, but also has a certain shade tolerance.

How to grow coleus

To grow coleus, you need to use well-drained, breathable, loose and fertile soil. Provide it with an indoor temperature of 20-25℃ and good ventilation conditions, and pay attention to proper shading. When changing the soil, you can apply a thin layer of fertilizer at the bottom of the pot as base fertilizer.

Watering Coleus

During the growing period of coleus, keep the potting soil and environment moist to prevent drought and waterlogging. Once too much water is given, the leaves will easily become dehydrated, the roots will also be infected and prone to rot.

Coleus fertilization

Coleus does not require excessive fertilization. Generally, during its growth period, you can apply thin fertilizer 1 to 2 times a month, with nitrogen fertilizer being the main fertilizer.

Coleus pest control

The common disease of coleus during the seedling stage is damping-off. To prevent the disease, the soil needs to be disinfected during planting. Leaf spot may occur during the growth period, which can be sterilized by spraying with thiophanate-methyl solution. It is also prone to damage by scale insects, red spiders and whiteflies, so omethoate spray can be chosen.

How to grow coleus at home

1. When growing coleus at home, you need to use a well-ventilated, loose, fertile, humus-rich soil and ensure sufficient sunlight, but avoid exposure to the scorching sun in midsummer. In winter, it is more appropriate to control the room temperature at 20~25℃, and the temperature must not be lower than 10℃.

2. During the growing period of Coleus, the potting soil and environment should be kept moist. In addition, apply thin fertilizer mainly composed of nitrogen fertilizer 1 to 2 times a month.

Matters Needing Attention in the Maintenance of Coleus

1. Although coleus likes a humid environment, do not water it too much. The principle is to prevent water accumulation in the pot. Do not continue watering when the soil is still moist. Wait 3-4 days after watering before watering it a second time.

2. Pay attention to keeping warm in winter. Coleus has poor cold resistance. If the temperature is lower than 5 degrees, frostbite may occur. Therefore, you need to pay attention to temperature changes in the cold winter and take insulation measures as soon as possible, such as moving it back indoors or covering it with plastic bags.
