Time to repot potted roses

Time to repot potted roses

Generally speaking, it is recommended to repot potted roses every 1-3 years. If the rose is growing vigorously and the soil in the pot is fertile enough, the repotting time can be appropriately extended. On the contrary, if the rose grows slowly and the soil in the pot is not fertile enough, it is necessary to repot it in advance. Below, the editor will introduce the time to repot potted roses . Let’s take a look.

1. Time to repot potted roses

1. Repotting in spring

You can choose to do it around March in spring. During this period, the rose begins to wake up from winter dormancy and can resume growth quickly after repotting.

2. Repotting in autumn

Another ideal time to repot is around September in autumn. At this time, the rose's summer growth peak has passed, and repotting can lay a good foundation for winter dormancy and spring growth.

2. How to repot potted roses

1. Prepare the soil

Choose a flower pot that is slightly larger than the original pot and has good drainage and air permeability, such as a root control pot. The pot should have drainage holes at the bottom to ensure that excess water can drain away. Prepare loose, fertile, well-drained soil. You can use garden soil, humus soil and sandy soil mixed in a certain proportion. Other tools include a small shovel, scissors , carbendazim solution, a spray bottle, etc.

2. Remove from the basin

Reduce watering a few days before repotting to keep the soil dry and make it easier to remove the plant from the pot. When removing the flower from the pot, hold the surface of the pot with one hand, turn the pot over, and gently tap the side wall of the pot to separate the soil from the pot. Then hook your hand through the hole at the bottom of the pot, lift the pot and let the plant out.

3. Pruning

After removing the plant from the pot, clean the old soil on the roots and retain some soil to shorten the acclimatization time. At the same time, cut off rotten roots, weak roots, and diseased roots to promote the growth of new roots. After pruning, soak the roots in a solution of carbendazim for five minutes to disinfect them, and then place them in a cool and ventilated place to dry.

4. Planting in pots

Place the rose in the center of the new pot and straighten the plant. While filling the soil, tap the wall of the flowerpot gently to ensure that the soil and roots are tightly combined. After filling, water thoroughly to ensure that the soil is in full contact with the roots.

5. Lighting management

After repotting, the rose is in the acclimatization period and its growth is weak, so direct sunlight should be avoided. It can be placed in an environment with good diffused light and ventilation, or shaded with bamboo curtains, door curtains, etc.

6. Water and fertilizer management

The first watering after repotting should be thorough, and then water appropriately according to the dryness of the soil to keep the soil slightly moist. At the same time, you can spray water around the plant to increase the air humidity and promote acclimatization. It is not advisable to apply fertilizer in the early stage of repotting. Fertilize after the plant resumes normal growth. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer and water every 10 days or so to promote growth and flowering.

The above is the time to repot potted roses. Be careful during the repotting process to avoid damaging the root system. After repotting, you need to observe the growth of the roses frequently and adjust maintenance measures in time to ensure their healthy growth.
