How to prune fuchsia

How to prune fuchsia

1. Pruning during the seedling stage

The main purpose of pruning it during the seedling stage is to cultivate it into a good-looking plant shape. When the seedling grows to 30 to 40 cm in height, remove its main trunk and top, cut off the overlapping branches next to it, and shorten the overly long branches appropriately to allow new branches to grow. At the same time, cut off the side branches that grow inward to maintain its beautiful plant shape at all times.

2. Pruning during flowering period

The peak flowering period is usually from April to July. It should be pinched in late March and it will start to bloom in April. Because the top of its branches will continue to bloom and grow, when the flower branches grow to a certain length, they must be properly tipped to allow them to grow new branches and bloom again. During the flowering period, the small branches and leaves growing in the middle can be removed. This not only avoids further consumption of nutrients, but also facilitates ventilation and light transmission.

3. Pruning after flowering

In July, if the temperature reaches above 30 degrees, it will enter a dormant period. At this time, the leaves begin to soften and need to be pruned again to reduce nutrient consumption and ensure safe summering. And the long branches should be cut short and the old leaves should be removed, leaving only the main branches, and placed in a cool place. In addition, if flower buds appear in summer, they should also be picked off. In this way, new branches will grow in autumn, and the plant shape will be more compact and beautiful.
