How to prune and propagate Clerodendrum thomsoniae

How to prune and propagate Clerodendrum thomsoniae

1. Cutting time

First, choose the right time for cuttings. Usually the best time is from May to June each year, because the temperature at this time is more suitable and the weather changes are small, so we no longer have to worry about the weather affecting the rooting and development of the branches.

2. Cutting medium

Before cutting the branches, you need to prepare the substrate, which can be made of a mixture of peat, perlite, leaf mold, etc., to make the substrate loose and breathable, and also facilitate drainage in the later stage.

3. Choose cuttings and branch cuttings

We can find branches that are relatively strong and disease-free, and make sure they are grown in the same year. Then we can cut them into several sections, with each section about 8 to 10 cm long. Then you can insert it into the substrate and then keep the temperature at around 20 degrees to allow it to take root quickly.

4. Maintenance after branch cutting

After it is grafted, the soil needs to be kept properly moist. After a period of time, it will grow roots. Then you can give it enough light and apply a small amount of fertilizer to ensure adequate nutrition. Soon, its branches will grow and extend outside the pot. When the branches grow to 15 cm outside the pot, they can be pruned about 10 cm away from the mouth of the pot, so that it can grow more new branches as soon as possible. Afterwards, you should also pay attention to topping and pinching, and when repotting in spring every year, shorten the branches above the ground to allow it to bloom more.
