How to grow gardenia in pots

How to grow gardenia in pots

1. Choose potting soil

When growing it in a potted plant, the most important thing is to choose the potting soil, because the roots of gardenia are fleshy and are sensitive to the potting soil. It is best to choose a pot made of ceramic material, because this kind of pot has good water permeability and good air permeability, so this kind of pot is most suitable for fleshy roots. In addition to the material, the size should also be considered. The size of the pot is determined by the volume of the roots. It is necessary to ensure that the roots can be accommodated and the growth space of the gardenia can be met in the next year. Because gardenia is an acidic plant, acidic soil is more suitable for its growth. In addition to ensuring the soil quality, you must also ensure that the soil has good drainage and looseness, so that the potting soil is selected well.

2. Lighting

Gardenia is a sun-loving plant. This plant needs at least eight hours of natural light a day to carry out normal photosynthesis. Because its branches and leaves are delicate, it needs to be shaded when the sun is strong at noon. When the days are short in winter, you can move it to places such as balcony windows to maximize its lighting conditions.

3. Watering

Gardenia prefers moisture to dryness, so you must ensure that there is sufficient moisture in the environment and in the soil. Water it two to three times a week, but not too much each time, to avoid water accumulation in the pot. Too much moisture in the pot will cause root rot. Secondly, you need to spray water on its branches and leaves every morning and evening to keep them moist.

4. Fertilization

During its flowering and growing period, it has a great demand for nutrients. Make sure to fertilize it two to three times a month. Refer to the instructions for the amount of fertilizer to be applied. In autumn and winter, its demand for nutrients is not so great, so once a month is enough.
