Time and method of planting red beans

Adzuki bean, also called red bean in some places, is an annual herbaceous plant of the legume family and is widely cultivated throughout the country. Because red beans are rich in nutrients and are widely welcomed in the market, planting red beans has become a way to increase economic income. Let’s talk about the time and method of planting red beans.

1. Planting time

There are two main planting times for red beans: spring sowing and autumn sowing:

Spring sowing: Sowing is generally carried out in spring in northern regions, usually from mid-to-late April to early May, when the average daily temperature is stabilized at above 14°C. Although spring sowing is also possible in the southern regions, the specific time may be adjusted according to the local climate.

Autumn sowing: mainly carried out in the southern region, the sowing time is generally from mid-to-late August to the end of September. In addition, some areas adopt the summer sowing method, which is generally carried out from late May to early June.

2. Planting Method

1. Site selection and land preparation:

Terrain selection: Choose a place with higher terrain, good drainage and fertile soil, and avoid areas that are prone to waterlogging or low-lying areas.

Soil requirements: Red beans are not very demanding on the soil, but sandy loam with good drainage, water and fertilizer retention, and rich in organic matter is preferred. A soil pH of 6.5-7.5 is more suitable.

Land preparation: Before planting, the soil needs to be tilled, fertilized and disinfected. In early spring, make ridges with slurry and press down in time to maintain soil moisture. Combined with land preparation, apply decomposed farmyard manure, compound fertilizer and other base fertilizers to meet the nutritional needs of red beans throughout the entire growing period.

2. Seed selection and sowing:

Seed selection: Choose seeds with full grains, no pests and diseases, and good quality. You can choose high-quality varieties such as Jihong 1008, Baoqinghong, and Longxiaodou.

Seed treatment: Seeds need to be dried before sowing to increase the germination rate. At the same time, pesticides can be used to mix seeds and disinfect them to improve the seeds' disease resistance.

Sowing method: Sowing can be done by row sowing, hole sowing or broadcast sowing. The sowing rate per mu is generally 1-2 kg. When sowing, you need to pay attention to controlling the sowing density and depth to avoid too dense or too deep sowing, which will affect the growth of red beans.

3. Field management:

Watering and fertilizing: During the growth of red beans, the soil needs to be kept moist but not too moist. Water and fertilize in time according to the growth of red beans. When applying fertilizer, the principles are to apply nitrogen fertilizer skillfully, apply phosphorus fertilizer heavily, and apply potassium fertilizer differently.

Intertillage and weeding: Red beans have weak growth potential during the seedling stage and are easily harmed by weeds. Intertillage and weeding should be carried out in a timely manner to loosen the soil, increase ground temperature, and regulate soil moisture and nutrient conditions.

Pest and disease control: Red beans are easily attacked by pests and diseases, such as aphids, red spiders, powdery mildew, etc. Prevention and control are necessary in a timely manner, and a combination of ecological regulation and chemical control can be adopted.

Harvest at the right time: Harvest when the red bean pods turn yellow and the seeds become hard. After harvesting, adzuki beans need to be dried and stored to prevent mold.

In summary, the planting time and method of red beans need to be determined according to local climate conditions and soil conditions. The yield and quality of red beans can be improved through scientific planting management and reasonable field management measures.
