How to propagate plum blossoms

How to propagate plum blossoms

1. Seed propagation

This method first requires selecting fruits that are ripe enough, preferably large with small cores. Generally speaking, it is best to do this in autumn, and the time should be around late September. After planting, water thoroughly and cover with a thin layer of fine sand. It will grow seedlings in the spring of the second year, and they can be transplanted when they grow to about 10 to 15 cm.

If you choose to sow in spring, you should first dry the collected seeds and then preserve them in wet sand, and then take them out and sow them early in early spring.

2. Grafting propagation

This method is usually carried out in early spring and can be either branch grafting or bud grafting.

If you use branch grafting, you must first choose a suitable rootstock. Usually peach trees or apricot trees will do, but plum trees are best. If overlapping, use a sterilized sharp knife to cut the top of the rootstock and the bottom of the cutting into the shape of horse ears, align the green skin layer, and tie the two tightly together. In addition to overlapping, we can also adopt the splicing method. For splicing, we need to cut the wood in the middle and make the cuttings into a wedge shape. Then insert the scion into the wood, align the green skin layer, and tie it tightly.

If you want to bud graft, you can carve a T-shape that can reach the wood part at the base of the stem of the selected tree, cut the bud to be propagated into a shield shape, pick up the epidermis and quickly insert it into the T-shape, then tie it up immediately. After 15 to 20 days, the wound will heal and then you can loosen it.

3. Cutting propagation

Choose the cuttings well, generally choose one-year-old strong branches, the length should be controlled between 10 and 20 cm. After treating with rooting agent, bury most of it in the soil, leaving only 2 to 3 cm on the soil surface. It is best to leave a bud on it. As for the soil, it is best to choose a relatively loose one, and the best time is November, when there are not many fallen leaves and nutrients can be provided for the cuttings in time.
