How to propagate Dendrobium

How to propagate Dendrobium

1. Seed propagation

Its seeds are very small, with about 20,000 seeds in one fruit. They are yellow in color, powdery in form, and generally do not germinate. It can only germinate when there is abundant nutrition, appropriate temperature and humidity, and suitable light conditions, and generally requires artificial cultivation. Although it has a large number of seeds, the probability of them germinating is very low.

2. Propagation by division

Do it in spring or autumn, preferably in late March or early April before it sprouts. Choose healthy and strong 1- or 2-year-old plants with many rhizomes, pull them out of the soil, remove the withered branches and leaves and broken twigs, retain about 3 cm of roots, cut off the excess roots with scissors, and divide them into several plants according to the number of stems, ensuring that each plant has 4 to 5 stems, and then plant the divided plants.

3. Cutting propagation

Do it in the spring or summer, preferably in May or June. Choose healthy and strong three-year-old plants with full stems, leaving 4 to 5 nodes on each part, about 15 to 25 cm, and insert them in river sand, making sure the stems do not fall. Wait until the buds on the stems grow out and aerial roots grow, then you can move them to other places for planting.

4. High bud propagation

It is carried out in spring or summer, mostly in summer. Choose plants that are three years old or older. Every year, there must be axillary buds on the stems, also called high buds, and aerial roots that can become seedlings. When the seedlings grow to 5 to 7 cm, they can be cut and planted.
