How to propagate roses

How to propagate roses

1. Seed propagation

This method is mostly used to cultivate new varieties. The seeds collected in autumn are planted in bags filled with moist sandy soil, and then the bags are placed in an environment with a large temperature difference between day and night. After one month, they are moved to a place with a temperature of about 20°C. After the seeds germinate, they can be sown.

2. Propagation by division

Plant deeper or add soil to the roots to allow each branch to grow new roots. Then you can repot and cut off the side branches that have grown new roots to separate them into new plants.

3. Cutting propagation

① Cuttings of semi-lignified branches: This method is to select branches whose flowers have just withered from June to September, cut off the stalks of the flowers, cut the lower part of the branches flat, 2-3 nodes into small sections, remove the lower leaf, and then remove the dead and old leaves, and then use growth stimulants to treat them before cuttings.

②Hardwood cuttings: Use one year's full branches prepared before wintering. The same 2-3 nodes are divided into small sections, 10 branches are grouped together, and a 30cm hole is dug in a room with low temperature. The branches are buried upside down in the soil and the top is covered with soil. At the same time, the humidity of the soil should be maintained. Cuttings can be carried out in the spring of the following year.

4. Grafting

① Bud grafting: Every 5 to 9 days, select good young shoots from the healthy original plant, cut them with a knife, and graft them onto the Baiyutang or rose rootstock. After the buds are grafted, cut the branches with grafted buds into sections, with one grafted bud in each section, and then use the cutting method to graft the branches.

② Branch grafting: In spring, you can use cut grafting and belly grafting to graft branches onto the branches of other plants.
