Spring glutinous corn open field sowing time

Spring glutinous corn open field sowing time

Sticky corn is loved by people for its unique sweet and soft taste. In addition, its short planting cycle and high economic benefits make it one of the best choices for farmers. So when is the time to sow glutinous corn in the open field in spring? Let’s learn more about it below.

Spring glutinous corn open field sowing time

The time for open-field sowing of glutinous corn in spring mainly depends on local climatic conditions, especially ground temperature. Generally, when the soil temperature in the 5-10 cm tillage layer is stable at above 10℃, you can start sowing. According to the climatic characteristics of different regions, the spring sowing time in the Yangtze River Basin and its south is generally March to April; in North China and Northeast China, it is April to May.

How to manage glutinous corn after open-field sowing in spring?

1. Seedling management

After sowing, the fields should be checked and seedlings should be replenished in time to ensure that all seedlings are grown. Thinning and transplanting should be done when the seedlings are of appropriate size, usually thinning out when they have 3-4 leaves, and transplanting when they have 5-6 leaves.

2. Intertillage and weeding

Combine manual weeding with tillage and avoid using chemical herbicides . Intertillage can promote root development, eliminate weeds and improve the nutritional conditions of corn.

3. Water management

Water thoroughly immediately after sowing to ensure that there is enough moisture around the seeds to facilitate smooth germination. Throughout the growing season, keep the soil moist but not too wet, and avoid standing water to prevent root rot.

4. Fertilization points

The fertilization of glutinous corn is different from that of conventional corn. It is mainly carried out once during the small trumpet stage, with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers as the main fertilizers. 10-15 kg of high-phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizers are applied per mu, and the fertilizer needs to be applied at a certain distance around the corn plants in the center of the ridge in combination with ridge supporting. In addition, spraying 0.4% potassium dihydrogen phosphate aqueous solution on the leaves during the corn silking period can help increase grain weight and quality.

5. Artificial pollination

Detasseling every other row or plant before corn sheds pollen and artificially assisted pollination during the flowering period can increase yield. The method is: bring the pollinator close to the corn tassel, gently shake the flower, and shake the pollen into the container. Alternatively, you can use a dry brush to apply the collected pollen to the filaments.

In general, the sowing time of spring glutinous corn should be determined according to local climatic conditions and soil temperature. Of course, in addition to paying attention to the sowing work, subsequent field management measures should also be kept up to ensure the healthy growth and excellent quality of glutinous corn.
