How to propagate the chicken shit vine

How to propagate the chicken shit vine

1. Seed propagation

1. Seed selection and processing

The selection of seeds should be based on the mother plant of the Cistanche deserticola. If you want to grow the next generation with good growth, the mother plant must also grow well, such as having a beautiful shape, dense leaves, and not being invaded by pests and diseases. Choosing such Cistanche deserticola seeds for planting can ensure the quality of the seeds first.

Generally, the ripe fruits of the chicken shit vine are picked in October and November every year, and then piled together until they rot. After they rot, the skin of the fruit is rubbed off by hand to get the seeds. After getting the seeds, you need to select them. Generally, you will choose fuller seeds to ensure that there are enough nutrients in the seeds for them to grow. After screening, store the seeds in relatively moist sand and wait until the second year to sow them.

2. Sowing method

In the spring of the following year, that is, in March or April, you can sow the seeds of the chicken shit vine. When sowing, dig a hole about 7 cm deep in the ground. The length and width of the hole should be controlled at about 30 cm to allow the seeds sufficient space to grow. Then place about 10 seeds evenly in the hole, fill it with soil, and cover the soil with a layer of wood ash.

2. Cutting propagation

1. Selection and treatment of stems and vines

In February or March every year, vines are selected for cutting propagation. Generally, old vines with a growth age of about 2 years are selected. The old vines must not have diseases and pests and must grow very healthily, so as to increase the success rate of cuttings. After making your selection, cut the vines to about 30 cm in length and make sure they have 3 or more cuttings. These vines are the best.

2. Stem cuttings

After selecting suitable stems and vines, you can start cuttings. When cutting, you should first dig a hole about 20 cm deep in the soil, and the width and length should also be about 30 cm. Three stems and vines can be placed in each hole, and each cutting must have at least one bud node.
