How to propagate catalpa

Seed propagation of catalpa ovata

The first important thing in seed propagation is seed collection. The seeds should be collected from old catalpa trees that are more than 20 years old, and then dried and stored. The next step is to soak the seeds. Before sowing, soak them in warm water at about 30℃ for 4 hours, then dry them, then mix the seeds with wet sand evenly and wait for germination. Water and turn the soil regularly to ensure uniform humidity inside and outside. The seeds can be sown after they open.

Grafting propagation of catalpa ovata

Grafting of catalpa trees can be done in winter or spring, bud grafting can be done in spring or late autumn, and in winter, wet sand can be stored indoors after grafting and then transplanted in early spring. It is best to graft around Qingming Festival, and the survival rate is higher if the soil is covered while grafting. In addition, cleft grafting can be performed, that is, prepare the necessary scion and rootstock, align their cambium layers, tie them with hemp rope and plastic rope, and seal them with wet soil. It will germinate in about 10 days.

Root propagation of Catalpa ovata

The root propagation of Catalpa ovata can be chosen in late March. Select 1-2 cm root strips from well-growing Catalpa ovata trees, with a length between 12-20 cm. The incision should be smooth and buried obliquely in the soil. When burying the roots, press the surrounding soil to make it firm, and then water it thoroughly.

Flat Burial Method of Catalpa ovata

As the name suggests, flat burial means placing the roots flatly in the soil and making the soil firm. They will sprout about 20 days after burial, and then the tillers can be removed, leaving only one branch with good growth on each root.
