What varieties of white wax lychee can be grafted?

The white wax lychee can be improved into other varieties through grafting technology. According to existing research and practice, the white wax litchi can be used as a rootstock for grafting with a variety of litchi scion varieties to improve fruit quality and economic benefits. So what varieties can be grafted onto white wax lychee? Let’s learn more about it below.

What varieties of white wax lychee can be grafted?

The varieties of white wax lychee that can be grafted include Baitangpeng, Guiwei, Nuomici, etc. Note that when selecting grafted varieties, the affinity between the rootstock and scion should be considered to ensure a high grafting survival rate and rapid crown formation.

Key points for grafting white wax litchi

1. Rootstock Preparation

Choose healthy, disease-free and insect-free white wax lychee as the rootstock, and cut a bevel on the smooth part in preparation for grafting.

2. Scion treatment

Choose 1-2 year old litchi branches as scion, and make sure each scion has 1-3 strong and full buds. One end of the scion is cut into a bevel of 1-2 cm in preparation for grafting.

3. Grafting method

Grafting is usually carried out in spring or summer, preferably between March and April or June and July. The grafting method can be cut grafting, cut the rootstock 15-20 cm from the ground, flatten the cut, and then make a vertical cut downward on the inner side of the cambium, about 2-3 cm in length. Cut a 2-3 cm long cut on the smooth side of the scion branch, and cut the base of the back of the cut into a horseshoe-shaped section. Insert it into the cut of the rootstock, align the cambium, and secure it with a plastic tape.

4. Post-management

After grafting, prevent ant damage and supply water and nutrients in time to ensure the survival of the graft. Pay attention to the control of environmental temperature and humidity to avoid excessive temperature and humidity affecting the growth and fruit quality of litchi.

5. Check the survival rate

Check the survival rate of the scion 15-30 days after grafting. If the survival rate is too low, re-grafting can be carried out in time.

6. Other points

Attention should be paid to protecting the grafted site, timely pruning the rootstock, reasonably loosening the binding, timely removing the sprouts, tying the posts to prevent splitting, pinching the new shoots, preventing diseases and pests, and managing fertilizer and water to promote the healthy growth of the grafted tree.

In general, through grafting, the quality and yield of white wax lychee can be improved. However, when grafting, be sure to avoid using varieties with poor affinity with the white wax lychee as rootstocks, such as seedless lychee. The recommended varieties include white sugar poppy, osmanthus flavor, and glutinous rice cake.
