Potatoes are a widely consumed crop around the world and are loved by people for their diverse cooking methods and delicious taste. So, when should potatoes be planted and what are their requirements for growing conditions? Below we will explain in detail the time and method of planting potatoes . 1. Variety selection When planting potatoes in the fall, choose varieties with a shorter growing season to ensure they can be harvested before the cold winter temperatures arrive. Whole potatoes are more suitable for growing as seed potatoes, while cut seed potatoes are more susceptible to rot and disease. The ideal seed potato size is around 30 grams. 2. Planting time The planting time for potatoes varies from region to region. In our country, potatoes are planted from October to December every year in most areas. If the climate in your area is mild, it can be grown almost all year round. The Northeast region usually plants in April and May, while areas such as Hunan and Shanxi may plant two seasons in February, March and August. Places like Zhejiang may plant two seasons in January, February and September. Planting time is mainly determined by local temperature conditions. 3. Seed treatment About 10 days before sowing, the potatoes should be placed at a suitable temperature for germination. When most of the sprouts have grown to the length of a fingernail, move the potatoes outdoors to dry for about a week. Before sowing, cut the potatoes into three to four pieces according to the condition of the sprouts, and sprinkle them with wood ash in preparation for sowing. 4. Soil conditions Potatoes are not picky about the soil, but the soil should avoid being too sticky or compacted. Loose, breathable, well-drained sandy soil is preferred. The pH value of the soil should be moderate, neither too acidic nor too alkaline. When planting in potted plants at home, you can mix decomposed materials such as sawdust and rice husks with the soil, and add river sand and humus to improve the soil structure. 5. Temperature requirements Potatoes prefer cool climatic conditions and grow well at lower temperatures. When the air temperature exceeds 25°C, potato growth slows down, and the optimum temperature for tuber growth is between 15°C and 18°C. The optimum temperature for the growth of the above-ground parts is 15°C to 25°C. Above 38°C, potato growth will stagnate. Therefore, the temperature during sowing should be controlled at around 20°C. The above are the basic requirements for potato cultivation. I hope it will be helpful to growers.
