How to prune wolfberry bonsai

How to prune wolfberry bonsai

Four seasons pruning

spring

As the temperature gradually rises in spring, wolfberries sprout earlier than other plants. Since their cut ends recover more slowly, try to leave them longer when pruning. It has a high rate of new buds, so it needs to be pruned in time. After early April, if new sprouts are found, they can be removed directly. This can avoid nutrient loss and maintain the plant shape. At the same time, the excessive growth of its original branches should be inhibited.

summer

Summer is the most active growing season, so be prepared to top the plants at all times to prepare for the abundant fruit in autumn. In fact, wolfberry has two fruiting seasons, one in summer and one in autumn, but there are fewer fruits in summer, so there is no need to keep the fruits. The length of its branches can be kept within 20cm, and longer ones can be pruned reasonably. During the hottest part of summer, it will go dormant and all its leaves can be cut off. This is also the most thorough summary operation.

autumn

As the temperature gradually drops in autumn, wolfberries will begin to grow new buds. At this time, you need to remove the new buds and pinch them appropriately, so that the fruit can grow more evenly. Around early October, you can move the potted plants to a cooler, shady place to extend the time you can enjoy the fruits.

winter

In winter, after the fruits and leaves have fallen, you can reshape the tree and also cut off the old, weak and sick branches. If the density of the whole plant is too large, you can prune it at this time.

Precautions

The branches of wolfberry are not very solid, so pay attention to the curvature of the branches when pruning.
