Clivia root care method

How to nourish roots?

If you want to grow Clivia well, you must first take good care of the roots. To take good care of the roots, you need to work hard in three aspects: soil preparation, watering, and fertilizing.

1. Soil preparation

Clivia has fleshy roots, so the soil must be loose and breathable, and have a certain water retention capacity. Never use pure garden soil to grow Clivia, as it will easily cause the roots to rot and stop growing. Flower lovers who don’t know how to mix soil can refer to the following methods:

① 20% pine needles + 10% coarse sand + 50% rotten leaves + 10% charcoal + 10% others

② 20% river sand + 20% humus soil + 40% pine bark

③ 5% charcoal particles + 20% pine needles + 60% rotten leaves + 15% sand

2. Watering

The general principle for watering Clivia is not to water it unless the soil is dry, and water must not accumulate.

When watering, poke your finger or chopsticks into 1/3 of the soil. If it feels moist, do not water. If it feels dry, you can water it, and water it thoroughly.

3. Fertilization

Clivia likes fertilizer, especially during the peak growing season in spring and autumn. When repotting, you can sprinkle roasted melon seeds, castor seeds or bone meal on the bottom of the pot as base fertilizer. The base fertilizer should account for about 1/10 of the entire potting soil.

In addition to base fertilizer, you can also apply a thin layer of decomposed bean cake water to Clivia once every 10 days or so in spring and autumn, and apply some fish water or phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before flowering in late autumn.

How to induce roots?

Clivia's roots are prone to rot. Does that mean it cannot be saved after the roots have rotted? Not necessarily. Sometimes, even if the roots are all rotten, Huahua can teach you how to revive it!

1. Cut off the rotten roots of Clivia, leaving no roots at all, soak them in carbendazim for 15-30 minutes to disinfect them, and place them in a cool and ventilated place to dry for 1 hour.

2. Prepare a glass bottle or plastic bottle, put sand in it, and spray the sand with water.

3. Bury the base of the rootless Clivia in the sand, just enough to allow the Clivia to stand upright, but don't bury it too deep.

4. Spray water on the sand every day to keep it moist. After about 10-15 days, the Clivia will grow plump white roots!

How to nourish the roots of succulent plants

How to nourish roots?

For succulents, root care is of utmost importance, because if you are not careful the roots will rot. So if you want to grow succulents to be plump, cute, and colorful, you must first learn how to care for the roots!

1. Soil preparation

It is very important to prepare the soil for succulents. It must be loose and breathable, and the proportion of particles should account for half or more. Otherwise, water accumulates at the roots and the roots are prone to rot. You can refer to the following plan for soil preparation.

In places with low humidity and good ventilation such as windowsills and balconies, you can mix perlite: peat soil: coarse sand: rice husk charcoal in the ratio of 2:4:1:1.

In greenhouses, sheds and other places with high humidity and stuffiness, you can use leaf mold: perlite: Akadama: coarse sand in a ratio of 3:3:1:1.

2. Watering

Do not water succulents too much. Do not water them unless the soil is dry. Wait until the surface of the soil in the pot turns white or feels particularly light.

For spring and autumn types and winter types, water 1-2 times a month in summer, 3-4 times a month in spring and autumn, and 1-2 times a month in winter.

For summer-type succulents, water them 3-4 times a month in summer, 1-2 times a month in winter, and twice a month in spring.

3. Flower Pots

The pots for succulents must be breathable. Use more ceramic pots and fewer plastic pots and glass pots. There must be air holes at the bottom of the pots.

How to induce roots?

If the succulent plants that have been cut off or planted with leaves do not take root in the soil for a long time, wouldn’t it be very frustrating and you always want to pull them out and take a look? Don’t worry, today Huahua will introduce to you a method to make succulents take root quickly.

1. Don’t rush to plant the succulents you just cut. You must first dry them in a cool and ventilated place for 1-2 days and wait for the wounds to scab and heal.

2. Find a plastic bottle or glass bottle, pour in clean water, insert the succulent stem into the bottle mouth, pay attention to the water level, the bottom of the stem should be very close to the water surface, but do not touch the water.

3. Place the entire root-inducing device in a well-lit and ventilated place. You will be able to see fine roots in about 3-5 days. When the roots grow to about 2 cm, you can transplant them into a flowerpot!

4. If you want the leaves of succulents to take root quickly, you can find a plastic bottle, fill it half with water, poke a few holes on the water surface, insert the leaves in, and they will take root quickly.

How to Care for the Roots of Orchids

A good orchid with excellent appearance and blooming every year must have white and strong roots. Otherwise, the roots will be thin and weak. Root care is the most important thing for an orchid.

How to nourish roots?

1. Planting material

To grow orchids well, planting materials are crucial. They must be breathable and retain water, and particles should account for at least half of the material. Huahua recommends two recipes to you here.

Simple formula, perlite: leaf mold = 1:1.

A relatively complex formula, perlite: leaf mold: pond bed stone: snake wood chips: fairy soil: coconut bran = 1:1:1:1:1:0.5

2. Watering

It should be neither dry nor wet, but moist. There must be no water accumulation, nor long-term lack of water.

If you find that the soil in the pot is darker in color, feels damp to the touch, and the moss is a little moldy, it means the soil in the pot is too wet and you must not water it.

On the contrary, when you see the soil in the pot becomes lighter and whiter, the soil feels hard, and the moss on the surface of the soil wilts, you should water it immediately until water flows out from the bottom of the pot.

In spring and autumn, water in the morning with a moderate amount of water; in summer, water around sunrise or sunset with an increased amount of water; in winter, water at noon with a reduced amount of water. Spray water on the surface of the potting soil frequently in spring, summer and autumn to keep it moist.

3. Fertilization

During the growing seasons in spring and autumn, apply compound fertilizer rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium once every 7-10 days. The fertilizer should be dissolved in water and added with more water to irrigate the roots of the orchid. You can also ferment some organic fertilizers yourself. In spring, you can apply rotted bean cake fertilizer, and in autumn you can apply some rotted fish water, rice washing water, etc.

How to induce roots?

If orchids are watered too much and their roots rot, or if they have empty roots over time, these roots need to be cut off. But after cutting them off, how can you make the orchid grow new roots?

1. Remove the orchid from the pot and wash the soil off the roots with clean water.

2. Cut off all the rotten roots and empty roots in the orchid root system, and apply wood ash or carbendazim on the wound for disinfection, and dry it in a well-ventilated place with diffused light for 15-30 minutes.

3. Prepare sphagnum moss and soak it in water in advance. After it is thoroughly soaked, take it out and squeeze it a few times with your hands until no water comes out, but you can still feel the moisture with your hands.

4. Wrap the orchid roots with sphagnum moss and place them in the flowerpot.

5. Spray water once every 4-7 days to keep the sphagnum moss slightly moist but not waterlogged. In about 15-20 days, the orchid will grow white, tender and strong roots, which is particularly pleasing to the eye.
